Dear 19 Year Old Me...

Reflecting on Youth and Wisdom

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Nick, a college sophomore from LSU, who wanted to explore potential career paths by shadowing us for a day. As we spent time with Nick, I couldn't help but be impressed by his proactive approach to exploring career options at a young age. This experience also made me reflect on my own past and the lessons I wish I had known when I was 19 years old. Here are three valuable insights I shared with Nick during his visit.

  1. Building Relationships: The Power of Making Diverse Friends

One of the most crucial aspects of any profession or job is building relationships. In college, you have a unique opportunity to interact with people from various backgrounds and interests. These connections can prove to be invaluable as you progress in your career. Take the time to make friends with individuals from different sectors, as they will offer diverse perspectives and open doors to new opportunities down the line. Invest in building trust and rapport with others, and you'll find that these relationships can be a source of support and growth throughout your life.

  1. Embrace Uncertainty and Balance Confidence with Humility

Entering the real world can be daunting, and it's natural to feel like you need to have everything figured out. However, it's essential to embrace uncertainty and realize that it's okay not to have all the answers right away. Instead of focusing solely on achieving perfection, focus on building confidence in yourself and your abilities. Strike a balance between confidence and humility, as people are drawn to those who are both self-assured and approachable. Confidence without arrogance and humility without insecurity will help you navigate life's challenges with grace.

  1. Master Your Craft and Market Yourself

While excelling in your chosen field is crucial, it's equally important to understand the significance of marketing yourself effectively. Being the best at what you do won't guarantee success if no one knows about your skills and expertise. Learn to showcase your talents, communicate your achievements, and build a personal brand that sets you apart from others. By mastering your craft and effectively marketing yourself, you'll create more significant opportunities and attract the right people and opportunities.

Spending time with Nick and sharing these valuable insights with him was a rewarding experience. Looking back on my own journey, I realized the significance of these three lessons: building strong relationships, embracing uncertainty with confidence and humility, and effectively marketing oneself. I hope these lessons will serve Nick well as he continues to explore his career options and forge his path in the future. It's essential for all young individuals to take the time to explore their passions and learn from others' experiences, just as Nick did. Remember, wisdom often comes from the reflections of our past, and it's never too early to start cultivating it.
